Reading & Riding with Commute Solutions

Summer is here!  Well, not officially until June 20th, but it sure does feel like it!  School is out, the weather is hot and ozone season is in full swing.   Instead of driving alone why not grab a good book and try a carpool, vanpool or transit.  You can expand your imagination while helping to keep our air clean.

Looking for a good book? Join the Austin Public Library for their Summer Reading, Some Aren’t.  This adult summer reading program runs from June 1 through August 31.  All you need to do is pick up a frequent reader card at any Austin Public Library location, read 5 books, and then turn it in for your chance to win lots of great prizes.  But why should all the adults have fun?  There is also a Summer Reading Program for youth that runs from June 1 to August 26.  Children can earn a free book just for reading!

If you have the summertime blues and don’t know where to start, visit the APL’s Recommend page.  From there you can find fiction, mysteries, spy novels and more!  To discover more libraries in your area, visit here and find your own page-turner!

Spare the air and catch a ride on one of these great services!  You can visit lots of libraries throughout our region and stay cool on your journey.  The Texas State Bobcat Tram, CARTS and Capital Metro all offer a fun way to get around this summer.

No book.  No problem!  If you are on a Capital Metro bus or the Texas State Bobcat Tram and happen to see one of the Commute Solutions interior bus signs just scan the QR code with your smartphone and you’ll instantly be connected to Project Gutenberg.  From there, you can download books and add a plot twist to your commute.  It’s just that easy.

As temperatures rise, be sure to check the air quality conditions before heading out.  The CLEAN AIR Force of Central Texas offers a free Ozone Alert Program.  During Ozone Season, which runs from April 1st through October 31st, Central Texans are encouraged to reduce their emissions and air pollution.  You can sign up for to receive Ozone Watch/Warning email alerts and breathe easy.

So what’s hot this summer?  Reading and Riding of course!
